Where to stay in Málaga: which area to choose

The area matters more than the hotel. This is what travellers ask when they land, explained area by area: who each one suits and what to check before you book.

Historic centre

Everything is on foot: cathedral, Alcazaba, museums, tapas bars and shops. The most convenient area for a short stay without a car.

Suits you if you want
First visit, 2–4 day city breaks, travelling without a car.
Keep in mind
The pedestrian streets can be noisy, especially at weekends. Ask for an interior or higher-floor room. If you have a car, parking is hard: check the property has a car park.

Soho and Muelle Uno

An arts district by the port, a short walk from the centre and close to María Zambrano train station. Calmer than the old town, with plenty of apartments.

Suits you if you want
Arriving or leaving by train, couples, business trips and longer stays.
Keep in mind
Some streets are livelier at night. Check the exact location on the map before booking.

La Malagueta

Málaga's city beach, a longer walk from the centre. Seafront apartment blocks and a city-with-a-beach feel.

Suits you if you want
Families, and anyone who wants a beach without leaving the city.
Keep in mind
The beach is busy in summer. Some buildings are older: check recent photos and reviews.

Pedregalejo and El Palo

Former fishing neighbourhoods to the east, with a seafront promenade, beach bars and sardine grills. A relaxed, local feel and less touristy.

Suits you if you want
Beach and good food, week-long stays, families.
Keep in mind
To reach the centre you rely on the bus, a bike or a car. With a car, summer parking is difficult.

Near the airport and Torremolinos

If your flight is very early or very late, or you are picking up a rental car, sleeping close saves stress. The commuter train links the airport with Torremolinos and Málaga centre.

Suits you if you want
A one-night stopover, early flights, a road trip along the Costa del Sol.
Keep in mind
It is a transit area: to see Málaga you will need to travel in. Check for aircraft noise in the rooms.

Three tips before you book

  • Pick the area first and the property second; filter for free cancellation.
  • If you are hiring a car, confirm the property has parking or one nearby.
  • Read reviews from the last few months, especially about noise and cleanliness.
