Day trip guide
Day trips from Málaga: tour or rental car?
Six easy escapes within two hours of Málaga. For each: how long it takes, what to book ahead, and whether a guided tour or your own car makes more sense.
Tour or rental car?
- Tour: best for the Alhambra and the Caminito del Rey, where tickets run out, and if you would rather not drive.
- Rental car: best for Nerja, Ronda and the white villages: you set your own schedule and can link several stops. Book the car early in high season.
Caminito del Rey
Walkways hung along a gorge, about 55 km from Málaga. One of Andalusia's best-known hikes.
- How long it takes
- About 1 hour by car from Málaga, plus roughly 2–3 hours for the walk.
- Tip
- Entry needs a booking made in advance and it sells out weeks ahead in high season. Book this before the rest of your trip.
Granada and the Alhambra
Andalusia's most visited monument: the Nasrid palaces and the Generalife gardens.
- How long it takes
- About 1.5–2 hours from Málaga by car or coach.
- Tip
- Alhambra tickets sell out far ahead in high season. This is the best case for a guided tour, since entry and transport are included.
Ronda
A town on a 100-metre gorge with the Puente Nuevo bridge, Spain's oldest bullring and wineries in the hills.
- How long it takes
- About 1 hour 45 minutes by car from Málaga.
- Tip
- Combines well with a winery visit or the white villages. Go early, or stay over to see the sunset.
Gibraltar
The Rock, the Barbary macaques and duty-free shopping. A full day.
- How long it takes
- About 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from Málaga.
- Tip
- Bring a valid passport or ID card. If you hire a car, check your rental company's rules on crossing the border first.
Nerja and Frigiliana
Beaches, the Balcón de Europa, the Nerja Caves and the whitewashed village of Frigiliana close by.
- How long it takes
- About 1 hour by car from Málaga.
- Tip
- The easiest trip with a car, and it combines well with the coast road. Avoid the middle of the day in summer.
Setenil and the white villages
Houses built under the rock at Setenil de las Bodegas, halfway between Ronda and Cádiz. Easy to pair with Ronda.
- How long it takes
- About 2 hours by car from Málaga.
- Tip
- Great for drivers who want something different. There is parking at the entrance to the village.
