Málaga cruise port: what to do in 6 hours
A relaxed plan on foot for a day in port. Adjust it to your ship's schedule and always check your all-aboard time.
First hour: the old town on foot
The historic centre sits right next to the port, so you can walk. Start at the cathedral and the pedestrian streets, then head up towards the Alcazaba, the Moorish fortress above the centre.
Hours 2–3: Alcazaba and the Roman theatre
The Roman theatre sits at the foot of the Alcazaba. If you want the views from Gibralfaro castle above it, allow extra time for the climb and avoid the middle of the day in summer.
Hour 4: lunch, local style
Try a few tapas rather than one big dish: fried fish, anchovies in vinegar, aubergines with cane honey. The Atarazanas market is a good, easy stop. Lunch is normally eaten from about 2 pm, but many places serve earlier in the tourist centre.
Hour 5: wine or a seafront stroll
Málaga's sweet wines are the local speciality; the historic Antigua Casa de Guardia pours straight from the barrel. Or walk to La Malagueta, the city beach, if the weather is good.
Hour 6: back to the ship
Aim to be back at the port at least an hour before the all-aboard time printed on your ship's schedule. Taxis can queue when several ships are in, so leave a margin.
Prefer a guide, or want to go further?
A guided walk or a food tour saves planning time and keeps you away from tourist traps. Check start times against your ship's schedule, and keep a margin before all-aboard.
